1 Timothy 6:9,10: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” Two types of people are described in relation to wealth. The first type are those who “desire to be rich.” An inner lack of godliness and contentment leaves a vacuum filled with greed. This greed drives people into temptation, snares and foolish and harmful lusts. Drown literally means to drag to the bottom. Destruction and perdition are synonymous with ruin and irretrievable loss. This loss may be experienced in this life , as through a wrong purpose for living, or it may be experienced in the afterlife if material desires lead a person away from Christ.
