Jesus is talking with Nicodemus in John 3:5,6: “Jesus answered, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”‘ When Jesus states “born of water and the Spirit” there are several implications here. Jesus was referring to water baptism. Water is understood as a symbol for the Holy Spirit. Water is to be understood as a symbol of the Word of God. Similar imagery can be found in Eph.5:26 and 1 Pet.1:23. Flesh cannot be made into spirit. A person must experience a Spiritual rebirth to enter the kingdom of God.
