The disciples James and John asked Jesus if they could sit at His right hand and left hand in His glory – we pick up the story in Mark 10: 41-45: ‘And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John. But Jesus called them to Himself and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”‘ The point here is not the fact that Gentile rulers lord it over them, but the very idea that they seek to exercise authority. Jesus wants each of His followers to be a servant – one who as an attendant waits on others. The word slave signifies subjection, not bondage. A ransom is the price paid to free slaves or hostages. Christ’s life is given for others, in place of their lives. Try to be a servant this weekend – follow the example Jesus set. Enjoy life free from the bondage of Satan by following our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
