1 Peter 1: 13-16: “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance, but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written,’Be holy, for I am holy.'” Gird your loins is a reference to folks in biblical times who would gather up their long robes and tie them around their waists so that they could move quickly and freely, we need to to do whatever it takes to focus our thoughts on those things that allow us to serve God successfully, all the while eliminating any thoughts that would trip us up. Be sober, Peter’s main concern here is using mentally and spiritually sound judgment. Believers should not pattern our lives after the desires that controlled us when we were not Christians. We are to live so as to be dedicated totally to God and separated from the sin of this world.
