1 Samuel 16: “But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him. And Saul’s servants said to him, ‘Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you.” After the Spirit of God came upon David, Saul was no longer empowered by the Spirit to serve as king. It appears that the ministry of the Holy Spirit was selective and temporary in the lives of the Old Testament believers.Distressing spirit from the LORD – this affliction has been understood in various ways:
1) demon possession as divine punishment. 2) demonic attack or influence. 3) an evil messenger. 4) a spirit of discontent created by God in Saul’s heart. Whatever it was, it was immediately noticed by Saul’s servants.
