The apostle John writes to the believers in his day regarding Gnosticism which was a problem that threatened the church in Asia Minor. This was the teaching that blended Eastern mysticism with Greek dualism. Based on the concept that matter is evil and spirit is good, Gnostics concluded that if God was truly good He could not have created the material universe.. Therefore, some lesser god had to have created it. According to them the God of the Old Testament was the lesser god. Hence this scripture for today’s Word – 1 John 2: 24, 25:”Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that He has promised – eternal life.” The message they heard from the beginning was that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God who had come in the flesh. Eternal life speaks of both the quality of life in the present, a life filled with the joy of God, and the promise of a future life in eternity.
