AwAreness – is your name Grace?

Posted in Gypsy Carns on February 21, 2010 by Gypsy Carns

Grace? What is it?  A person’s name for sure.  The dictionary has many definitions: it can be used as a noun – elegance, loveliness, beauty, style, kindness, mercy, leniency, blessing, prayer, and thanksgiving.  There are some uses as a verb: adorn, enhance, decorate, dignify, honor, distinguish.  Amiable traits to be sure.  The bible has a view on grace as well.

In this particular verse King David has crafted grace into a song praising the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ : Psalm 45:2 – You are fairer than the sons of men; Grace is poured upon your lips; therefore, God has blessed You forever.  In the book of Luke the author speaks of Jesus growing up and in Luke 2:40 it states: And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.  Again in the book of Acts, after the apostles had been blessed with the Holy Spirit and took to witnessing in the streets the book says in ACTS 4:33 – And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.  And great grace was upon them all.

It would be nice if we were saved by the kind things we did to one another, but according to the bible it does not work that way.  We are chosen by God to recieve His grace, it is a gift.  This is a very important scripture friends…if you are following this series of AwAreness I urge  you to read this over several times and pray over the words here.  In Ephesians, the apostle Paul lays it out for all of us.  Ephesians 2:8 – 10 states: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is a gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Christians have been saved by grace.  The grace of God is the source of salvation; faith is the channel, not the cause.  God alone saves.  Salvation never originates in the efforts of people; it always arises out of the loving-kindness of God.  So Paul is saying that even our belief in God does not originate with ourselves.  This too is a gift, so no one can take pride in their position as a Christian.  Everything is received from our merciful and gracious Father.

Pass it on, Grace…beauty, style, leniency, honor, blessings, prayers..these are gifts from On High to us.  If we use these gifts in our daily lives; how we deal with our children, our friends, on the job, even out partying…wouldn’t it be a better place for us to live.  Wouldn’t it be a better life for us all!

AwAreness: naked and open…

You know everything we do, we will be accountable for, when we are judged at the end of it all.  That’s pretty heavy if you ask me.  I know I have done some great things in my life, but I have done an equal amount of stupid things…hurting people..myself included.  I just hope you can take a minute and read with me from the book of Hebrews about what is in store for each and every one of us:  Hebrews 4: 12, 13: For the word of God is  living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.   NOTHING is hidden, even down to our motivations for deeds done.  God can discern down into our Spirit – who we are – not what we show others. Think about that..I know I am..

AwAreness – friend or foe?

As a blues musician part of my “training” is to listen to the blues masters who came before.  For me being a Spiritual bluesman I have listened to many, many Gospel blues records.  One of my favorites is from Rev. Edward W. Clayborn – “Your Enemy Cannot Harm You”.. meaning you better watch out for your friends.  Here are some of his lyrics: ”  Christ spoke there at the table, told his boys to watch and see.  The hand that will betray your master, now sops in the dish with me.”   We all know that Judas was the money handler and one of the 12 apostles, yet he betrayed Jesus in the end.  Another line in the song is more universal: “When you tell him your secrets, they will act like they are glad.  But they never say anything about it, until you make them mad.”  We confide in each other, and all is well and good until we do something to make our friends mad and then they tell what they have promised to keep secret.

Well, that old devil is the same way.  He temps us with worldly desires and knows where our weaknesses lie.  “Oh come on”, that little voice says, “one drink won’t hurt you, this will be the last one.”  “Take a hit off that pipe, you’ll enjoy that buzz, you don’t have  to do it on a regular basis.”  Then, when we follow through on that – Satan turns to God and says about us: “look at these unrighteous people, they have no respect for you.”  Satan basically temps us to sin, and then accuses us of rebelling against God.  Satan starts on his path to eternal damnation by lying to Eve. In Genesis 3:1 the bible states: Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.  And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said,’You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”  Then in verse 4 Satan tells Eve: Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.  For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”  Now – go back a bit and in Genesis 2:8.9 it says: The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.  And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.  The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  Then in verses 15 – 17 God says these words to Adam: Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you will surly die.”  So who is the liar here?  Who is the tempter?  Who can we trust?

Jesus tells us plainly.  In Matthew the 4th chapter, Jesus had fasted for 40 days and 40 nights so He was weak and the devil knew it.  We pick this up in Matthew 4:1 – 11,  if you want to read the entire account but for time’s sake I will only touch on two points.  Verse 1: Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  verse 3, 4: Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds form the mouth of God.” Jesus is temped three other times then in verse 11 it says: Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

We are no different folks, when the devil comes upon you, and he will, be strong – quote the word of God, and in a little while Satan will leave.  We know the devil is here because the bible tells us in the book of Job 1:6, 7: Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.  And the LORD said to Satan, “From where do you come?”  So Satan answered the LORD and said, “From walking to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”  So he is here folks!!  How do we know that Jesus can help us through this temptation?  He’s been there, in the flesh, just like us and he did not sin!!!  How strong is that!  Hebrews 2:18 says it all: For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are being tempted.

So be careful what you tell you friends, be careful what that little small voice in your head says – we have a way out from our afflictions – Jesus Christ.  Accept that He came in the flesh, call on Him in times of prayer, it will make a difference in your life.  It doesn’t mean you won’t have problems, the rain falls on the just and the unjust, but it does mean you will learn how to deal with them.  Who is your friend or foe?

AwAreness – Black or white?

Posted in Gypsy Carns on February 7, 2010 by Gypsy Carns

So is life black or white?  Is race black or white?   It would be nice if life were that simple, it’s either black or white…right or wrong.   People are a color; black skinned, white skinned, red skinned, some what does that mean, really and why should it mean anything?  God’s written word, the bible in Genesis 1:1 says: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Also in verse 26: Then God said,”Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  It doesn’t say God created him African-American or Caucasian or Asian.  He made man in His image.  We are all created in His image, why does there have to be a distinction to race?  The constitution of the USA starts off: “We the people”…it doesn’t say whitey wants this and the black man wants that – it is a common goal for a unified people.  What happened to us?  We are all a part of God’s family on the earth..pray about it…be more tolerable with all your fellow-men, women, and children.  Don’t see color – see what God created in His image.
